What To Expect at a Graveside Burial Service
A graveside burial service, also sometimes referred to as a committal service, is an essential part of the funeral service for some cultures. Primarily seen in catholic services, the commital is a final sendoff service held at the grave site or within the mausoleum. This article will discuss common aspects of graveside services, and what you can expect. Please note that some customs may differ based on family preferences or religious practices.
When Does the Burial Service Happen?
Generally, the burial service occurs after a wake at a funeral home. For many Catholics, a funeral procession will leave the funeral home to go to a church for a memorial mass. After the church service, the procession continues to the cemetery for the burial service. For many families, this is followed by a repast.
What Happens During a Burial Service?
When the funeral procession has gathered at the gravesite, the service begins. The graveside services are generally shorter than the church services but may include religious readings, or a family member may speak briefly. Some of the floral arrangements from the wake may be transported to the cemetery for the service, but it is usually only a select few. Often, this service will conclude with members of the procession being handed a flower to place on the casket or burial urn.
Privacy and Burial Services
Families may want privacy at the burial services. If you go to the mass, they may or may not announce the information for the burial service. You should only go if an announcement is made, or if a close member of the family directly informs you of the details. Otherwise, you may not be respecting the family’s right to privacy.
