Grief During A Pandemic
The current pandemic is leaving many of us stuck at home, and many of us concerned about the welfare of our friends and family. While emergency protocols and social distancing is in effect, it can be hard to go outside without worrying.
Fighting off Cabin Fever
Being trapped indoors can bring up feelings of grief and worry, which can lead to feelings of anxiety and depression. It can be hard to stave off feelings of cabin fever when you only go outside for groceries. Take some time to enjoy the outdoors, while practicing safe social distancing. Even going for a walk around the block can help you feel less trapped, and can help fight off grief. Remember to follow social distancing rules when going outside, to reduce the spread of infection.
“Seasonal” Depression
Many people staying indoors are suffering from something similar to seasonal winter depression. Normally, winter depression is caused by the shorter days and going out less. A lack of outdoor activity and social interaction can be disheartening. Going out, even to your backyard can help reduce these feelings of depression. Opening your windows to let fresh air in can also be beneficial to reducing feelings of seasonal depression. While that may not be possible in the Winter, letting the Spring air in now can be very uplifting.
Grief and the News
The news can be an important source of insight in these dark times, but it can also create anxiety and fear. While it is good to stay informed, it is probably best not to listen to the news all day long. It is probably best to check the news in short increments, and listen to more uplifting or light-hearted media as well. Watch some of your favorite shows and movies. Stay informed, but try to keep yourself happy, as well.
Nutrition During Social Distancing
It can be easy to eat junk food all day while staying home, but proper nutrition is key to both physical and emotional health. Eating healthier makes you feel good, and can improve your overall happiness. While it may be harder to find fresh fruits and vegetables at your local grocery store, it is important to eat a balanced diet; especially when most of us are being less physically active. Nutrition is also important in maintaining a healthy immune system.
