Obituary of Louis C. Barbato Jr.

Louis C. Barbato Jr. ("MacGyver"), age 74, passed away on April 7, 2020 at Staten Island University Hospital after a long, hard-fought battle with COVID-19. Louis was a native Staten Islander born and raised in Tomkinsville and resided in Westerleigh for the last 48 years. He was the beloved son of the late Louis Sr. and MarjieBarbato and was predeceased by his sister Rosalyn Cortese. A graduate of Curtis High School and a carpenter by trade, Louis was the owner of LJB Associates Contracting and proudly worked for and retired from New York City Housing Preservation & Development's engineering and audit department. After retirement, he worked as the head of maintenance at Matthew Funeral Home for the last 11 years. He enjoyed first and foremost being with his family and friends, as well as traveling, delicious dinners out, gardening, music, Broadway shows, building, fixing, and creating. Louis is survived by the love of his life and wife of 54 years Jean (DePete) and his daughters Lisa Rooney and Jennifer DeMeo (Michael), grandchildren Kayla, Matthew (Alexandra), Sophia, Victoria, and Michael, and great-granddaughters Gabriella and Madison. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and a cherished godfather, uncle, cousin, coworker, neighbor and friend to all. He was a great pal to all of his grand-pets. Louis was a proud and dedicated family man and all around amazing, selfless, and genuine person who was and still is loved by all. This is the greatest loss. Due to the public health crisis and current circumstances, the family will be having a Catholic Mass and a celebration of his life at a later date. The Barbato family would like to thank all of their family and special friends for their prayers and support through this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Louis Barbato's name to a charity of your choice for healthcare workers and the fight for a cure for COVID-19.
