Obituary of Maria Aragona Garzone

Maria Aragona Garzone (nee Scaparro) 77, passed away on July 19, 2020. She passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family after a long battle with cancer. Maria, a native Staten Islander, was a beautiful person inside and out and she will be sorely missed by all. Maria was born in Staten Island Hospital on Castleton Ave, to Mary (Maggio) and Daniel Scaparro on September 22, 1942, attended P.S.18 and graduated from Curtis High School in 1960. Maria was a proud homemaker, and while caring for her disabled son, she enjoyed traveling, gardening, and tending to her beautiful home and Koi pond. As a parent of a disabled child, she was instrumental in obtaining many benefits, services, and extra-curricular activities for the disabled community. She is survived by her son, Anthony Aragona Jr., daughter Denise Varriano, son-in-law Anthony Sr., and grandsons Anthony Jr, and Michael Varriano, along with her dear brother Frank Scaparro Sr., and his wife Liz, their four children, Frank Scaparro Jr., Nicole Scaparro and her son Jaxon Rivera, Jessica Scaparro, Michael Scaparro & wife Samantha (nee Quirk). She is also survived by her late brother Joseph's children Gina & Michael Rawlings, and their daughter Joie, Danielle & Jeff Palm, Lisa & Michael Palm, Diana & Vincent Cammisa & their son Rocco. Maria was predeceased by her husbands Anthony Aragona, Sr., Anthony (Tony) Garzone and partner John Pannozzo; and her brother Joe Scaparro. In addition Maria will be greatly missed by her dear friend Vincent Rivera. Services at Mathew Funeral Home are being held privately.
