Obituary of Ronald Merritt

Ronald Merritt, 72, of Castleton Corners, passed away peacefully on November 3, 2020. He was the beloved husband of Julia Breslin for eight years; devoted son of the late Roy and Alice Merritt; loving father of Ronald Merritt, Deborah Peterson (James); dear step-father of Anita Costello (Anthony), Maireann Breslin, Sheila Breslin, and Caitriona Breslin; cherished grandfather of Alicia Smith, Samantha Smith, Cameron Smith, and Tiffanie Bellfield, and Olivia; dear brother of Roy Merritt (Sandy Gileta), Raymond Merritt (Debbie), Alice Barrack (Sandy), and Maureen Mullen (Fran); fond uncle of Danielle Mullen, Melissa Strang (Patrick), Pamela Dunn (Kevin), Mr. Merritt was born and raised on Staten Island and was graduated from Port Richmond High School. He worked for over 25 years as a Bus Operator for the NYC MTA, and later owned and operated the Wreck Room Bar on Henderson Avenue, as well as Legend's Pub on Victory Boulevard. Ronald enjoyed rooting for the Yankess and the NY Giants, as well as golfing. He also had a getaway home in Pennsylvania that he enjoyed travelling to. In addition, he was a member of the Emerald Society and was a big fan of Elvis Presley. Funeral from the Matthew Funeral Home, Inc., 2508 Victory Boulevard, on Thursday, departing at 8:45 am. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Teresa's R.C. Church, at 9:30 am. Interment will follow in Moravian Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to visit on Wednesday from 2:00 to 5:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm. Due to Covid-19, all visitors must wear masks, practice social distancing, and be mindful that a small wait to visit might exist due to capacity limitations.
