Obituary of Michael Urkonis

Michael Urkonis, 65, of West Brighton, passed away suddenly on November 4, 2020. He was the beloved longtime partner of Joyce Strype; loving stepfather of Nicholas Strype; dear brother of Al Urknonis, James Urkonis, and the late Sheila Urkonis. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great nephews. In addition he is also survived by great-great nieces and great-great nephews. Mr. Urkonis was born and raised in Brooklyn and graduated from Fort Hamilton High School. After High School he lived in various locales due to his job, and finally settled on Staten Island later in life. He was employed for the last 14 years as the Director of Facilities for On Your Mark. Michael was an avid sports fan, especially rooting for NY Yankees, NY Giants, and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. He thoroughly enjoyed travelling to many sports stadiums around the country with his stepson Nicholas, and amassed a large sports memorabilia collection. Funeral from the Matthew Funeral Home, Inc., 2508 Victory Boulevard, on Saturday, departing at 8:45 am. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Teresa's R.C. Church at 9:30 am. Interment to follow. Family and friends are invited to visit on Friday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm. Due to Covid, all visitors must wear masks, practice social distancing, and be mindful that a small wait to visit might exist due to capacity limitations.
