We have had the privilege of knowing Dr. Madu Rao for many years. He was a great humanitarian who worked his whole life to further medical knowledge, to improve the lives of others and, to teach and train physicians, residents, and students. He was an exceptional human being in that he always went the extra mile and reached above and beyond to help others. He was respected, admired and most of all loved by all. He was fun to be around and we enjoyed and treasured the times we spend with him. He was so very, very special to our whole family. We will miss him. We will especially miss his kind and gentle nature, his smile, his sense of humor and his keen intellect. May he rest in peace. We are extending our heartfelt condolences to Alice.
With Love and Prayers,
Barbara and Joe Concepcion and Family

I am blessed and honored to have had Dr. Madu Rao be a part of my training as a pediatric pulmonologist and my life. I cherish the conversations we had, his kindness, calmness, collegiality. As fellows we looked forward to his teachings. He personally guided me with research projects, looked over my proposals to apply for grants (even with very short notice) and made very helpful comments and suggestions, and helped with personal matters.
His little office was at times a place to escape one's daily troubles. Whoever entered left with a smile, a wink and a helpful word.
I miss him.
Rest In Peace, Dr. Rao.

Legendary Madu Rao, MD.
Dr. Madu Rao (as a Chief of Pediatrics at Kings County) is seen 2nd from the right in the 3rd row and Binita Shah (1st yr resident) seen 2nd from left in the first row; 1977.
This photograph represents a tip of the Iceberg - hundreds and thousands of residents (just like me) were “born as pediatricians” under the profound influence of Dr. Rao.

Dr. Rao, I am indebted to you for lifetime!

It was deeply saddening to learn of Madu’s passing. We came to know and love Madu. He was a joy to work with. He was an unswerving supporter of our Department of Pediatrics at University Hospital and Kings County Hospital. His experience and wisdom helped guide the Downstate Department of Pediatrics for decades, even after retirement. He was an outstanding clinician, teacher and leader, recognized locally, nationally and internationally. He promoted academics in pediatrics and supported research in the Department with great generosity. He always maintained a personable and caring demeanor toward everyone whose lives he touched. He was a true gentleman in every sense of the term. He will be sorely missed by everyone who was fortunate to know him.

I've heard it said, you can be great or you can be successful. Dr. Madu Rao was truly both. A wonderful teacher and mentor, he had the ability to show that he cared not only about your professional development but also for you as a person and an individual. I will miss deeply his quick wit, the sparkle in his eye and the many sage sayings he imparted to me over the years.
The end of a great era. Mrs. Rao, you have my deepest condolences. Your husband was well loved.

This is truly very sad news! Dr. Rao was an excellent teacher and a very good mentor. He had a superb way of teaching and an exceptional sense of humor. I have a lot of memories of him. The way he lived and taught pulmonary physiology. The way he made the basics of pulmonary physiology very easy. Even now when I talk to my fellows, I think I can explain things much better to them because of the way he explained them to us. The way he mentioned Machu Picchu during his teaching sessions was the reason I visited Peru :) Just the thought of him and looking at his picture puts a fond smile on my face :) He could joke about almost anything. He once advised me that I should drive a car only on empty road :) When I moved to Little Rock he suggested to me to get a long car saying that that way I could span the entire Little Rock in one go :) When I returned to SUNY Downstate to do a talk, he attended it and mentioned that he was truly happy that I had some humor in my talk :)
I truly loved him from the bottom of my heart and I am sure there are many who do so!
Lots of prayers and love for the family.

I am Lakshmikantan from Bangalore, India. Madhu was one of our close friends during our school and College days in the late 1940’s and during 1950’s. And thereafter.
His passing away is a great sentimental loss . I recollect with nostalgia the good times we had together.
Pray for his soul to attain sadgati (heavenly abode) and strength to Alicia to bear the loss.

Dr. Madu Rao will always be remembered by his sole passion and love of life---his love for children and their plight.

I am deeply saddened by the passing of my dear friend and colleague whom I have known for over 50 years. I first met him while I was a resident in pediatrics at Kings County Hospital and SUNY Downstate Medical Center. We both stayed on as faculty until retirement and continued as voluntary faculty after retirement for some time. He was a very bright individual, a gentleman, an excellent pediatrician and Pediatric pulmonologist. He loved to teach. Countless medical students, residents and fellows in pediatric pulmonology were taught by him. On a personal note, he was a true friend, a mentor who cared deeply about me and our family. Madu had a great sense of humor.
I consider myself fortunate to have known Madu. I will miss him dearly. His memory and friendship will remain with me forever. May his soul Rest in Peace.

Madu was one with us and he always made us feel like we were one with him.
Beside keeping our minds sharp, he was part of our heart and soul.
Downstate was a much better place because he was there.
And, I too am much of who I am because of him.
His loss leaves a tremendous void and a terribly grieving heart.
But, his legacy endures through all those whose lives he touched.
Madu, we forever love you, will always remember you and miss you.
