Obituary of Linda Sorrentino
Linda (Tirone) Sorrentino
Loving, Lively Native Islander
Linda (nee Tirone) Sorrentino, age 58 of Westerleigh has died. She died on December 31, 2017 in her home of uterine cancer.
A life-long Islander, Linda was born December 19, 1959 in Port Richmond not far from her family's business, Tirone's Shoestore. At a young age Linda moved to Westerleigh where she attended the local public schools (P.S. 30, I.S.51). After graduating Port Richmond High School, Linda went to work for Cowen & Co. brokerage firm in Lower Manhattan. Linda left the work force to raise her daughter, Danielle R. Sorrentino, becoming involved in many PTA-related activities and functions.
After Danielle was grown, Linda began working as babysitter/part-time nanny for several families, specializing in families with children close in age. "Linda was fun-loving and had a zest for life in everything she did. Our courtship proved it" remarked her husband of 26 years, Charles V. Sorrentino, whom she met on a blind date on a Friday the 13th. They were married on May 5th, 1991.
In addition to husband and daughter, Linda is survived by father Salvatore Tirone, Sr.; two sisters, Marie Wedel and Carol Murray; and her brother Sal, Jr. Her surviving family includes three aunts, two uncles, 18 cousins; 8 nieces and nephews; and 9 great-nieces and great-nephews. Linda was predeceased by her mother, Rose (LaFata) Tirone.
Linda was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Graniteville.
Coming from a large family, Linda particularly loved any family function, but was particularly fond of the informal get-together dinners with her cousins. "Linda really enjoyed the Cousins' Dinner we had. It was her way of staying connected with everybody" said sister Carol.
Her favorite sport team was the Mets. She recently went to see their 2017 spring training down in Florida.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any gifts be made in Linda's memory to Christ United Methodist Church - Building Fund; or to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
