Obituary of Richard Peter Michael Whalen

Vietnam Navy Veteran Richard Peter Michael Whalen, 74, died surrounded by his family at home on January 13, 2021. Richard was proudly a lifelong Staten Island native who predated "the bridge". He was the son of the late James and Rose Whalen; and is survived by his wife and life partner, JoAnn (nee Moschella); two children, Matthew and Jillian; brother and uncle to many. Richard was born in Midland Beach and graduated Port Richmond High School, class of 1966. Shortly after high school, Richard made the conscientious choice to enlist in the United States Navy and served during the Vietnam War. Following his honorable discharge, he continued to serve his country in the US Naval Reserves and his community as a New York Police officer. Richard married JoAnn in 1971 and raised their two children in New Dorp. He enjoyed hosting parties for his friends and family, be it a basement New Year's party or a backyard barbeque. When he wasn't at home, he could be found traveling the country with his family, immediate and extended, in his beloved motorhome. He twice circumnavigated the lower 48. Richard's personality (and voice) was loud and he lived life to the fullest. He was always willing and able to help anyone in need and leaves a hole in the family circle. His presence will be doubly missed at future fireworks and Christmas displays. A viewing will be held on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 from 2:00pm to 5:00pm. Due to the COVID pandemic, masks are required to be worn in the funeral home and social distancing will be enforced. Due to capacity limitations, there may be a short wait during services. Out of state and elderly mourners are encouraged to join via zoom at 4:00pm for the Military Honor Guard Salute. A private cremation will follow. A celebration of life will be held at a date in the future. The family requests no flowers. They wish to recognize the excellent and compassionate care Richard received from Dr. Alexander Bershadskiy.
