Obituary of Roy D. Johansen

Roy Douglas Johansen, 67, of Staten Island, NY, died peacefully at home on Sunday, May 16, 2021, after a long battle with esophageal cancer. Born February 5, 1954 in Staten Island, NY, he is the son of Lawrence Johansen and his late mother, Carole (Rivette) Johansen. Roy is a graduate of Susan Wagner High School and NYC College of Technical Cooking. He retired from the US Postal Service as a plumber after 32 years. Roy was devoted to his wife, Mary, and all members of his family. He will be dearly missed by family and friends. Roy’s heart was bigger than Texas. Roy’s favorite pastimes were watching the New York Mets and cooking shows. Roy loved to cook, bake, and eat. He loved being retired and not shoveling snow at the post office. Over the years Roy and Mary have rescued several cats who became their four legged children. Roy was very proud of his Norwegian heritage. Roy is predeceased by his mother, Carole. He is survived by his father, Lawrence, Lawrence’s partner, Judy Trugoutt, his beloved wife, Mary, his loving son, James Thompson and loving daughter in law, Shannon, and grandson, “Little Buddy”, James Robert. Roy is also survived by his loving sister, Pat Perkins, his nieces and nephews, Allison Gergus, Joseph Gergus, Lori Cable, Maggie Pond, Matthew (his godson) and Sarah Gergus, Elizabeth and Kenny Donnery, Terence Shea, Bridget Maley, Kenny Maley as well as his brothers and sisters in law, Michael and Joan Shea, Veronica Shea and Carolyn Barcus, George and Kathleen Shea, Eileen and Ken Maley, and many loving cousins. Visitation at the Matthew Funeral Home, Inc., 2508 Victory Boulevard, on Thursday, from 3:00 to 7:00 pm. A service will be conducted at 5:00 pm, in the funeral home. Due to Covid, all visitors must wear masks, practice social distancing and be mindful that due to current capacity limitations, there may be a small wait to visit.
