I played with Gary at Minot State and shared co-captain during our football years. I have shared the memories of our football experiences with my children, family and friends, remembering his strength, talent, skill on the field and the years of sharing joy and laughter. I will never forget the weekend his mom, and Brenda came to visit and cooked an amazing Italian dinner for us all!
He and Brenda visited with us in Florida several years ago, and we picked up, right where we left off. He was a wonderful example of honor, integrity and compassion for others and a deep love for all sports. He always seemed bigger than life!
I will miss my friend. God's Blessings to Brenda, Kelly and Gary, Jr. and family.

My sincere sympathy to all of you. I played football with Gary at Minot State and have often wondered what he was up to I played center and he played guard to my right. I hadn’t seen Gary since I graduated in 1978. Gary was strong and always went hard. Again my sympathy to you all. Dave Wisthoff

Gary was a great guy & we had so many talks on the 8th floor at 65 Court St. I know he was a great family man! Truly shocking because he always looked in very good shape. I am very upset & sad, my sincere condolences to his family and know he will be missed dearly!

I am truly saddened to hear about Gary's passing. He had a larger than life personality with a booming voice to match.
Most of my time with Gary was in a professional setting in which, I almost never gave him "good news" yet, his sense of humor always made me smile. Rest in peace, Gary. You left a special mark on all who knew you.
Your friend and accountant

Brenda and family so sorry with the loss of Gary truly a great man, friend, Husband, Dad, Grampa, Best friend to so many of us. Gary and I met in 1976 playing football at Minot. I am from ND, and he spend many trips to my home in Wahpeton, as a brother, meeting my family, parents friends. We. all loved him. We continued our deep friendship meeting Brenddderr as he would call her. We had family vacations together, wedding, and multiple visits when we were in the area. I got married and my wife heard about and talked to Gary on the phone, but never met. One Halloween Gary and Brendderr sent their Halloween costume picture, Brenndderr was a black cat, Gary a Flasher. My wife and I look at the snail mail picture, she said look "he is wearing blow up hands!" I Laughed so hard, said no, those are is normal Fred Flintstone hands...she said dont tell him I said that...first thing I do is call Gary tell him the whole story we all laughed until we cried..again.so many of those calls we had, and our wive's would roll their eyes saying here they go again the same old stories every time, we never got tired of hearing ourselves. This is such a sad time, and only relief I can have is my wife and I were blessed to know Gary, call him a brother, and glad he is not in suffering in pain. Brenda and family we love you so very much and her to help with the next tough chapters in life. God bless Gary, family.

Dear Brenda,
I was heartbroken to hear of Gray’s passing. As you know I worked with and/or for Gary for many years at the DOE and I’ve always held him in high esteem. He was always generous with his time, knowledge and advice. He was so down to earth and made everyone feel comfortable. I will always look back fondly on the conversations and laughs we had over the years. He was a good man. May he Rest In Peace.
Sincere condolences,
Angela Santoro

I am so sorry to hear of Gary’s passing. I first met Gary up in Minot, North Dakota, during football training camp. I think Minot State recruited 7 of us from New York, and probably another dozen from around the country. Gary was by far the best of the bunch. The last time I saw him was at a quasi-reunion of the Canarsie and Port Richmond players somewhere on Staten Island. He and Lou Rubio were still in good shape, while us Canarsie kids had ballooned. Gary kept many of us from being tossed out of college for being a bit out of control on campus. The President of the college pointed to Gary as the example to strive for, and if not for his exemplary behavior, many of us wouldn’t have played for MSC. Aside from being a super athlete, he was a hell of a good guy, always extending help to those most in need and to friends he met along the way. He will be dearly missed. Heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. I remain shocked to learn of his passing.

Dear Brenda and Family,
Please accept my sincerest condolences. Gary has been part of my family’s life since the Mt. Carmel-PRHS days. What a loss this is to all those that he has helped through the years through his NYC DOE position, and various fundraising pursuits. He was a Prince among men. Thank You for the memories dear friend.
Love and Peaceful Rest,

Gary Barton
A name that has touched so many hearts from the people that knew him. My wife Cindy and I met Gary 10 years ago when we purchased our Condo in Cape Coral Florida. Gary and Brenda were our next door neighbors. We introduced ourselves in the hallway and Gary explained that he and Brenda were decorating their condo and as soon as it was finished they would have us over for drinks. I told Cindy we can expect an invitation soon from our neighbors and were looking forward to it. Well, for the next 5 years I met Gary many times in the hallway and again, he kept saying we need to get together, which as you probably can guess NEVER HAPPENED. I just figured this guy was just trying to be nice and had no desire to make friends.
In 2016 we decided to sell our 2 bedroom condo as the 3 bedroom unit right above the Barton’s was for sale. After we moved into that condo I met Gary again, this time in the elevator and again, he said we have to get together, BUT to my surprise we actually got the invitation! The joke was we had to move further away from them before we got the invitation. We met Brenda and instantly knew that this would be a lifelong relationship. We had many things in common and got together more and more as time went on. We started to go out to dinner with other couples in our building and our group was created, but Gary and Brenda became more than just good friends. We actually saw each other as family. Looking back, we wish we had those extra 5 years, but we are grateful for what we had with him.
Gary was one of the most generous people I have ever known, not just to my wife and I, but to all that knew him. Gary was generous with his time, generous with helping people whether he knew them or not. For example, I mentioned that my nephew just graduated from college and was looking for a teaching position. Gary didn’t hesitate to offer his assistance both in offering guidance and helping my nephew find a job. He never met my nephew but based on our relationship, he opened his Rolodex to help. My family will never forget that.
Gary called me to see if I would co-op in a boat club membership. We researched different clubs and decided it would be a good deal for both of us. Normally I wouldn’t do this as a co-op membership could be a disaster for both parties, but with Gary I knew there would never be any issues. We enjoyed our boating time together so much that one time we weren’t paying attention as we should have and ended up being pulled over by the coast guard for boating in a restricted area – oh well!
The last time we saw Gary and Brenda was in Spring Lake, NJ at their rental home and had a great day together and planning for when they come back down to Florida in a few months. Unfortunately, it was not meant to be. Cindy and I can’t express how sad we are knowing that one of our best friends will no longer be around to go to dinner, get on a boat or just have a few drinks and laugh together.
GARY BARTON, is not just a name of a guy. Gary Barton was and is a giant of a man who left his mark on this earth and in his way, making it a better world for the people who knew him.
We will miss his presence but will celebrate that we had a chance to be a small part of his life.
Cindy and I love you GARY BARTON and know that someday we will meet again.
May you Rest In Peace!

What a devastating loss to so many people who have known, loved and shared his wonderful life.Knowing Gary as an entering Freshman at Port Richmond High school was a blessing for his fellow students and faculty as well. Throughout his life he stood tall and proud of his family, athletic honors, his high standing with the NYC Department of Education and his many life long, loving friendships, especially his group as i call them, "The Magnificent Seven". In my last conversation with Gary, as he was going through this horrible ordeal, he said, " Coach, when I get through this, we'll sit down with a beer and I'll tell you all about it". Unfortunately, we never had that glass of beer.Well Gary, I'm holding you to that promise...sometime in the future, we will have that beer.
Love you my good buddy,
Coach
