Obituary of Ernest A. Tulino

Ernest Anthony Tulino, 77 of Grant City, died Sunday December 5, 2021, at home surrounded by family after a long battle with Multiple Myeloma. He was the loving husband of Jane Tulino (Peat) with whom he shared 55 years of marriage. Born in Brooklyn, NY, he was the oldest son of the late Anthony V. Tulino and Lydia Tulino (Baietti). Ernie was retired from his second career as a Recreation Supervisor for NYC Parks & Recreation after 33.5 years of service. He enjoyed running the fitness rooms where he exercised daily and continued to serve the sports community of SI. In 2002, he retired from teaching and coaching after 34 years. His role ended at St. Peter’s as Varsity baseball coach after 21 seasons in the program. Mr. Tulino taught Economics, History, and Investments courses for 22 years at the New Brighton school. Ernie lived with no regrets; he mentored and inspired so many and was determined to leave everyone he met better, and more developed in their skills. Ernie always said his life experiences weren’t about wins and losses but watching his players improve and play the game the proper way. If 14 were on the roster, 14 athletes played. To him, everyone had an integral part on the field. He was proud of “The Coach Ernie Tulino Award for Sportsmanship” presented each year to the St. Peters baseball player who exemplified his ideals of character and integrity. The low-key, gentle giant led his team with 326 w 293 l and 13t including a 25w 13 l record in playoff games. Ernie was also an award winning Basketball coach and Manager. He was a baseball umpire for more than 20 years and PSALFOA Football official for 25, working as a Linesman and Line Judge, and winning Official of the Year 2005. You could always find Ernie somewhere on the field or court; he loved playing sports (Ernie was a talented catcher and quarterback) watching the Red Sox and officiating for many leagues. No amount of accolades could trump the honor of being called Poppy. His proudest accomplishments were being married to Janie, raising his 3 children, watching his 9 grandchildren grow up, and meeting his first great-grandchild. He is survived by his wife, Jane; son, Anthony D. Tulino and his wife Amy, of Chester, MD; daughter Jennifer Lipari and her husband, Michael of Travis; daughter Jodi McSwegan and her husband Matthew of Stroudsburg, PA; grandchildren: Anthony J. D’Ippolito; Michael J. Lipari and his wife Nicole; Lynn-Elizabeth McSwegan and her husband Edward Giles; Evan McSwegan; Jason Lipari; Jillian McSwegan; Corinne Lipari; Lauren Tulino; and Nicole Tulino; Great Grandson: Lincoln Giles; his brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Terry Tulino of Rosebank; as well as many beloved nephews, nieces, and friends who are family. There will be a viewing from 7-9pm on Tuesday, Dec 7; from 2-4pm and 7-9pm on Wednesday, Dec 8, at Matthew’s Funeral Home, 2508 Victory Boulevard, SI, NY 10314 and Funeral Mass at 10:30 on Thursday, December 9, 2021 at St. Christopher’s Church, 130 Midland Avenue. Interment to follow at Resurrection Cemetery, 361 Sharrott Avenue, Staten Island, NY.
