Obituary of Ellen R. Jones Washington

Ellen Regina Jones Washington was born on February 10th, 1934 and passed away on April 8th, 2022. Ellen was a native Staten Islander. She graduated from P.S. 22 and Port Richmond High School. Ellen had an exceptional academic career, she secured a place on Port Richmond High School’s permanent Honor Roll and graduated at just sixteen years old. After graduation, Ellen went to work for AT&T as a Stenographer until her marriage to Allen J. Washington on May 1st, 1955. Shortly after, Ellen became a mother and went back to work, balancing her career and family as her sons started school. Ellen worked for the US Public Health Hospital on Staten Island, as well as Richmond College. While working at Richmond College, Ellen began taking courses at Staten Island Community College, which led her to earn an Associate in Arts degree. Due to budget cuts Ellen transferred to Baruch College, but continued working toward her Bachelors degree. After receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree, Ellen was promoted to Director of Undergraduate Admissions at Baruch College. At the time of her retirement, Ellen held the title of Director of Admissions for Baruch College’s Undergraduate and Graduate schools. After retirement, Ellen enjoyed traveling with her grandchildren, friends, sister-in-law (Thelma Washington), childhood friends Sue Meaders, Dorothy Moody and the “Baruch Crew”. In 2016, Ellen was honored as one of Staten Island’s “Unsung Heroes”. Ellen was also a devoted parishioner of St. Rita’s Catholic Church and a member of their Ladies of Charity group where she dedicated her time to supporting those in need, as well her surrounding community. Ellen is survived by, and was the loving mother of Mark (his wife Louise), Gary (his wife Laura) and Brian Washington. Ellen has ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren, and a brother, Theodore Jones Jr. She was preceded in death by her husband, Allen J. Washington and her loving parents, Theodore and Elvira Jones; as well as her sister Billie, brothers Thomas, Gerald, William and Ronald Jones. Ellen was also a wonderful Aunt to many nieces and nephews. Ellen had so many wonderful friends that she loved and cherished. Ellen will be thoroughly missed by all of her loved ones. Funeral from the Matthew Funeral Home, Inc., 2508 Victory Boulevard, on Monday, departing at 9:15 am. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Rita’s R.C. Church at 10:00 am. Interment to follow in Moravian Cemetery. Family and friends may visit on Saturday, from 2:00 to 5:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm.
