I first met Ray at his home in the summer of 1970. I just started dating Kathy sister Marilyn the same day. I realized right away how high the bar was set by Ray Smith. As a father, husband, son-in-law, brother-in-law, friend, person, and officer in the NYPD. When I was a young boy I was taught to learn from older men about being a real man. Love your family, be kind to others, give your help when needed, be a leader, and be true to yourself. Ray was one of my teacher's and we became close brother-in laws. I am very very happy that I got to be with Ray the day before he passed. That, I got to say goodbye to a true mentor in my life. I will always love him and miss him. He was one of the good guys. To Kathy, Raymond and Nancy, if I can ever help you, please reach out to me. I would like to keep the lessons I learn from Ray alive and maybe pass them on to others. It would be a better world if more people lived like Ray "Smitty" Smith. God Bless, Timothy Patrick Farley

I’ve known Ray Smith since I was age 7, that’s 63 years ago, when he and Kathy began dating. They married 3 yrs later.
Kathy tells me they never had an argument…in 58 yrs of Marriage, and I believe it!!!
Ray was a good son, brother, friend to many, husband, father, uncle, grandfather.
Ray was kind, generous, steadfast, loyal, quiet, dedicated and he was a role model to all who knew him.
Ray took great pride in his family and his lovely home. He enjoyed working in the yard with Kathy,
His work with NYPD and beyond was exceptional, tough and sometimes, very sad, but, “Smitty” was not one to complain!!!!
Ray was always ready to go on adventures with family and friends, camping, and the like.
“Mr Smiff”, May you rest comfortably from now on, and know that we’lll all miss you.
As far as this thing called Life? You rocked it!!!
Your adoring sister in-law

We're going to miss you, Ray, the quiet man with a heart of gold. Rest peacefully knowing that we cherish the memories of a man who dedicated his life and his career to serving others. The consummate family man, husband, father and grandfather, you made it your mission in life to ensure that those around you were cared for and loved. You were a man of few words, but your character, integrity and actions spoke volumes. As a police officer, you were a hero. You didn't see it that way, but we all did and we remain so very proud of your exemplary service. Rest easy, my friend, and know that our hearts will forever hold a place for you.

We have been blessed to have Ray as our dear neighbor for over 33 years. He always took great pride in his family as well as his beautiful home. Ray was always ready to lend a helping hand to all of his neighbors; he never looked for anything in return. Ray was a true GENTLEMAN. His quiet demeanor was a gift! Ray, thank you for your service to New York City as NYPD. Rest in well-deserved peace. You will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
Love and prayers to Kathy, Raymond and Nancy.
Love,
Marie, Steve and Fiona Reynolds
