Obituary of Joseph J. Yaccarino

Joseph J. Yaccarino School Bus Driver and WWII Veteran A lifelong resident of Staten Island, Joseph J. Yaccarino died peacefully at home surrounded by family. Born to parents Sadie and Luigi in 1927 in West Brighton, he attended PS18 and graduated from McKee High School. He was the last of three brothers drafted into the army at the end of WWII serving stateside and was honorably discharged in 1946. Joe was employed by Palma Ford, Children’s Bus Service, and Pioneer Transportation until his retirement in 1993. “Joe the Bus Driver” truly loved being with the children. Joe is survived by his wife Virginia of 69 years, sons Philip A (Cheryl), and Joseph L, grandchildren Joseph James and Ann Marie (Stieve). Joe has many nieces and nephews as well as great, great great, and great great great nieces and nephews. A lifelong best friend to the Anthony Marcigliano family. Joe was predeceased by his loving son Steven, his parents Sadie and Luigi, siblings Monsignor Augustine DiBlasi, Daniel Yaccarino, Salvatore DiBlasi, Fanny Mannino, and Pasquale DiBlase. He was a lifelong member and usher of Mt Carmel- St Benedicta Parish. Born and raised during the depression, during his early years he helped his father sell fruits and vegetables off a truck in the summer. As a youngster, he set pins in a bowling alley where he developed his lifelong interest in bowling. He enjoyed going to horse shows and Italian stage shows with his Pop. Joe’s greatest joy in life was being with his three sons. He enjoyed working on cars with his family and helping his sons with their race cars and attended many racing events with them. He was also a lifelong Yankee fan. Joe took great pride in his membership in the American Legion Joseph Merrill Post. Always with a friendly smile, Joe will be missed by all. Funeral from the Matthew Funeral Home, Inc., 2508 Victory Boulevard, on Saturday, 1/14, departing at 8:45 am. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel-St. Benedicta R.C. Church at 9:30 am. Interment to follow in Moravian Cemetery. Family and friends may visit on Friday, 1/13, from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 9:00 pm. The family requests that all visitors must wear masks!
