Obituary of Richard Scarfone
Richard Scarfone, 84, a resident of Bulls Head in Staten Island since 1969, died on March 21, 2023 after a brief illness. Born in Brooklyn on May 2, 1938 to Mario John and Edith (Scarola), dad married our beloved mother Arlene (Pisseri) in 1959. He was employed by the US Navigation shipping company soon after graduating from New Utrecht High School. Possessing a strong work ethic from a young age, he worked his way up from the mail room to become the terminal manager for Hapag Lloyd and was eventually employed by Global Terminals in Bayonne, New Jersey. Family was the center of his life and he frequently declared that his family was "the best." He was very proud of his children and spent many days watching his "exceptional grandchildren" compete in sports. Fishing was dad's passion and he spent countless hours fishing off the Coney Island coast on his beloved boat Old Spice, where he taught three generations of family members how to fish. He was a car enthusiast who owned a 25-year-old Mercury Grand Marquis that he waxed weekly! Other passions included music and dancing, being the family photographer, and vacationing with his family in Seaside Heights and Wildwood Crest NJ. In recent years, he became a loving caretaker for his wife. He had an infectious enthusiasm for living and all that he ever did, he did to the very best of his ability.
He is survived by Arlene, his wife of over 63 years, his children, Richard (wife Karen), Cathleen LoVerde (husband Vincent), and Steven (the late Nancy), his grandchildren, Steven (wife Marlee Silverstein) Vincent, Julia, Michael, Steven, Joseph, and Matthew, his brother Anthony (the late Joyce), his sisters-in-law Lorraine Manesiotis (Constantine) and Irene Pelusio (the late John), and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends who loved and admired him. In addition to his parents, he is pre-deceased by his brother Alfred.
