Obituary of Michael J. Sweeney

It is with heavy hearts to announce Michael J. Sweeney’s passing. A beloved Husband, Father, Poppy, Brother, Brother-in-law, Uncle and Friend. Michael J. Sweeney 73, passed away on September 19, 2023 surrounded by his family. Born In Meiers Corners, Staten Island in 1950. Michael was a lifelong Staten Islander. Michael is the beloved husband to Diane (Janks) Sweeney. Loving father to Michael & Bryan. He is the adoring Poppy to Riley & Benjamin, who were his pride, joy, and purpose in everything he did. Cherished Brother to the late James Sweeney. Survived by Jean Bradford and Robert Sweeney. Michael worked at many places throughout his life. Whether you knew him as Big Mike, Sween, Sweeney or Mr. Mike, he was sure to touch your heart in some way. It may have been the way he smiled delivering your mail. Providing lawn service which he loved dearly and was truly grateful for. Mr. Mike also worked for Reliable Paper Recycling of Jersey CIty where he had many great relationships with his colleagues and many other people he would see daily. He had an infectious personality which has enabled him to build strong and lasting relationships. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone; family, friend or stranger. A true old school “shirt off his back” guy. He will be greatly missed and will always hold a place in our hearts. Michael’s Memorial Service to honor his life will be held at Matthew’s Funeral Home on Wednesday September 27, 2023 from 5pm-9pm. “I was honored to have my Poppy come with me to my first Yankees game’ -Riley age 9 “My Poppy was kind and loving” -Benjamin age 7
