Obituary of Domenick Lanzi
Domenick (Dom) Lanzi, 85, passed away on March 16 th , 2024. He was the beloved husband of Cynthia Lanzi, loving father of Michael and Theodore, and an admired, deeply loved grandfather to Jack, Benjamin, Domenick and Vincent.
Domenick was born in Mauro Lucano, in the province of Potenza in Italy, to Filomena and Michael on May 19 th 1938. He arrived in this country in January of 1954, speaking no English, and with few material things, but bringing a mastery of his craft – iron work – with skills honed since childhood in the old country.
Shortly after an early stint resetting bowling pins by hand, he embarked on the journey that would define his career as one of the best master ironworkers in New York City. For more than three decades at the helm of Lanzi Brothers Iron Works in partnership with his brother, Anthony, and, for some of that time, his father, Dom was a successful small business owner who built a following that enabled the business to thrive.
When circumstances changed, he moved on, landing the position of master ironworker at Green-Wood Cemetery – a National Historic Landmark located in Brooklyn – where, freed from the demands of running ‘the shop,’ his artistry flourished. At Green-Wood, he focused on historically appropriate fabrication and restoration work that was in keeping with the design aesthetic of this treasured site. It seems only fitting that it will
be his final resting place.
When Dom wasn’t working, he kept himself busy. He was a long-time bowler in the Staten Leagues, a DIY home improvement enthusiast, an accomplished cook, and, like many an Island resident, a silently suffering Mets fan. His was a life well-lived. Above all, he was a family man, and he took great pride in the accomplishments of his wife, children and grandchildren… those who will miss him most.
Funeral from the Matthew Funeral Home, Inc., 2508 Victory Boulevard, on Thursday, departing at 9:15 am. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Blessed Sacrament R.C. Church at 10:00 am. Entombment will follow in Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY. Family and friends are invited to visit on Wednesday, from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 9:00 pm.
