Obituary of Thomas J. Walsh Sr.

Thomas Walsh Sr. passed away peacefully on April 1, 2024 surrounded by his loved ones at Northwell Hospital after a long and hard fought battle with Lung Disease. He leaves behind his wife of 43 years, Emily Walsh, whom he cared for very deeply. He was the loving father of Christina and Thomas Jr., devoted brother to Miriam and Chipper, and the best Pop Pop to his two cherished grandchildren Nicole and Joseph.

Born in 1954, Thomas was born and raised in the Westerleigh neighborhood of Staten Island where he would fix up cars and race around the streets before they became what they are today. He was a Staten Islander through and through and eventually bought his first house on Greenleaf Ave blocks from where he grew up and then his second home also in the same neighborhood years later, in which he would raise two children and where his two grandchildren would come to visit. A jack of all trades, plumbing, electric, painting he did major renovations himself in both houses to make them truly loving homes. There was nothing that he couldn't fix. Always the first phone call of friends and family, whether they were broken down on the side of the road or needed someone to look over a used car. But he was more than the person who would fix their cars or lend a helping hand, his kind heart is what attracted people towards him and he would truly do anything for his friends and family.

He worked as an Auto Mechanic and Supervisor for the United States Postal Service for 35 years. He made a commute every day to downtown Manhattan at 4:30 in the morning to give his children the best life they could possibly have. He was an avid NASCAR fan and his family will miss the view of him in his chair with a beer in his hand watching his race. He enjoyed visiting his brother and sister and their families in Florida and would take his family there yearly, sometimes even driving the whole way. A truly great man and a gentle giant with a pure soul, he left a positive impression on everyone he met and will be missed by all.

Visitation for Thomas is at the Matthew's Funeral Home, located at 2508 Victory Boulevard on Friday April 5, 2024 from 4pm-8pm. A funeral mass is scheduled on Saturday April 6, 2024 at 10:00am at Blessed Sacrament Church.
