Obituary of Annamma M. George

Our most precious and loving mother and grandmother, Annamma George (a/k/a Thankamma) was born on December 10th, 1941 to the late C.M. Mathai and Mariamma Mathai (Chavarukalayil House) in Mallappally, Kerala.  She was the sixth of eight children in a family of four brothers and four sisters.

In 1961, she attended Nagpur Medical College Nursing School in Delhi, India and worked as a Staff Nurse at Safdarjang Hospital.  Shortly after in 1969, she met and married her husband the late Nedungadappallil G. George (a/k/a Kunjumon).

She came to the U.S. in 1973 with Kunjumon following. They initially lived and worked in Philadelphia, PA but later moved to Brooklyn, NY. In 1978, they were blessed with their only child and son; Suresh George.

In 1984, they settled in Staten Island, NY where Thankamma continued work as a Registered Nurse (RN) and Kunjumon worked for the NYC Metropolitan Transit Authority. Thankamma notably held nursing roles at Maimonides Medical Center, Doctors’ Hospital, New Brighton Manor Nursing Home, and Staten Island University Hospital.

In 1989, Thankamma further grew in her spiritual faith in Jesus Christ by dedicating her life as a born-again Christian. She loved the LORD and passionately used every opportunity to spread the gospel and share her personal experience with others. She fellowshipped with other believers in prayer meetings and at the Indian Full Gospel Church in Staten Island.

As a wife and mother, she selflessly devoted all her thought and energy caring for her husband and son as well as doing whatever she can to support her siblings. In 2000, her husband passed away with all parental responsibility falling to her alone.

In 2010, she became a grandmother (a/k/a Ammachi) when her son Suresh and daughter-in-law Alice welcomed their daughter Abigail George. Followed by grandsons, Nathan S. George in 2011, Noah S. George in 2013 and Nahum S. George in 2014. Her grandchildren were the joy of her life after retiring in 2011 and spent every moment helping raise them. The grandchildren had a special relationship with their Ammachi having lived together since birth.

Our precious mother and Ammachi will be deeply missed, we find peace knowing that she is now completely in the LORD's care.
