Obituary of Elias Lee Gounardes

It is with great sadness that the family of Elias “Lee” Gounardes announces his passing on July 24, 2024. Lee will be greatly missed and forever remembered by his two daughters, Debra Somerville

and Elena Kokakis; his sons-in-law, Jamie Somerville and James Kokakis and his precious grandchildren Paige and Arielle Somerville and George and Luke Kokakis. Lovingly remembered by his brother Dr. Steven Gounardes, sister-in-law’s Dianne Gounardes, Sylvia Panarites, Irene Panarites, and brother-in-law George Panarites, his nieces, nephews, three great-nephews, and one great-niece.

Lee Gounardes, 74, of Tottenville, formerly of Queens, lived life to the absolute fullest. Lee was born to Angela and Harry Gounardes in Astoria, New York in 1950. He attended Kingsborough Community College. Lee went on to marry his life- long partner, Pam, on June 9, 1973. While raising his daughters, Lee worked for the City of New York with the Koch administration, and various presidential campaigns throughout his career. He also managed many nightclubs including the famous Webster Hall and owned various New York City establishments. Lee is an Archon of the Ecumenical Patriarchate Order of Saint Andrew.

Lee will be remembered fondly for his vibrant sense of humor and his cherished "family recipes.” Known throughout his community, he was always the person to turn to for advice and guidance. Lee was a passionate sports enthusiast, especially when it came to the New York Yankees and his love for horses. He loved spending time in the backyard with his daughter and son-in-law, enjoying the game of baseball on the outdoor screen.

Lee stems from a huge family and treasured every minute with them. He was an incredible grandfather, fondly known as Papou. He shared the title proudly with all those who loved him. He had a special place in his heart for his four-legged fur babies, Capone and his household companions, Daisy and Desi.

Anyone fortunate enough to have known Lee adored the incredible person he was. Everyone who knew him has cherished memories, unforgettable moments, and incredible stories to share, ensuring that his memory will endure for eternity. He dedicated his life to his wife who predeceased him in December 2021, two daughters, and most importantly, his four grandchildren. It is fitting that he peacefully passed away with them by his side.
