Obituary of Mary M. Mathew
Mary was born in Kerala, India on July 12, 1966. She attended Saint Margaret High School in Kerala. During Mary's second year at Jyothi Women's college at Kollam, she immigrated to the United States in April of 1987.
Mary was a loving daughter to her parents, Joseph D'Cruz and Mariamma Joseph, and a caring sister to her 5 siblings. She married Mathew Jacob (Chenkilath House, Kottayam) in December of 1988 and was a loving mother to her two children, Joel and Roshan. To Mary, family was everything and she always put their needs before her own. She was the glue that kept the family together.
In August of 2015, Mary was ready to make the ultimate sacrifice for her son. Without any hesitation, she was ready to give her kidney to allow her son to live. However while Mary was undergoing testing to be a potential donor for Joel, she was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. She fought a tough, long battle for the past three years but nevertheless she would always put her son and family first. Mary was a compassionate and hard worker at Staten Island University Hospital for the past 28 years and deeply enjoyed being of service to others. She continued to work even with her condition until the very last month before she was called to eternal rest on October 17, 2018.
Mary was a graceful, selfless woman who embodied love and true kindness. She always believed in showing forgiveness to others and was empathetic to other people's needs. All throughout her life, Mary was a devoted woman of faith who firmly believed that God was always present in her life. She never doubted God's plan even in the final days of her time on earth. Mary's last words were, "I am happy to go. God is calling me."
