Deacon John Orlando posted a condolence

I was a mere 12 or 13 years old when I first met Mr. Ponzi, always Mr. Ponzi, not Emidio or Larry because he earned that respect. He was the manager of the st. Thomas Aquinas baseball team, along with the coaches, Mr. Granice and Mr. Lewis. It didn't take long that Mr. Ponzi would start calling me "Jack," the only person in my life who coined that nickname. And it also didn't take long for me to determine that Mr. Ponzi was special, in service to his country, as a Marine, his community, as a Detective Sergeant in the NYPD, and most importantly as the patriarch of his family, and if he was your friend, you were BLESSED. He, ultimately over the next few years, had such a profound effect in my life, not just on the baseball field, but for the rest of my life. Way too much for me to share on this platform. Bottom line, in a world filled with children, and young men and women, seeking and searching for heroes and role models.....I found mine....and his name was and is Mr. Ponzi. Thank you for leaving that sort of impact in my life....that, today, at the young age of 74, I still think of you, your integrity, your honor, your care and your unconditional love. As a Catholic Deacon, I know that only the body is put to rest. Your soul, Mr. Ponzi, lives on in our hearts and minds. Till we meet again, my dear friend.

He always watched out for me. I worked in the 60 Sqd. He was the boss in Brooklyn South Homicide. Whenever him and his guys went to meal, he pulled me along with them. When my boss was out and I needed time off, he would sign my slip but somehow I’d find it in my desk draw the next day.
Never met a man like him. He left a lasting impression on me and his “Italian” flair and swagger will always be remembered.
Joe, we never met, but you’re a legend like your dad. My condolences to you and your entire family.
God Bless Larry. He eats at God’s table in the special place in heaven reserved for heroes.

I am so sorry to hear about the death of Larry Ponzi. It was a pleasure working with him and is one of the nicest men I have ever met. You could not help but like him. A very humble and modest person.
