Obituary of Joseph "Sonny" Gonzalez
Joseph Gonzalez, 88, of Westerleigh passed away on September 26, 2019. Born and raised on the lower East side of Manhattan, he was graduated from Brooklyn Automotive High School. He proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953, during the Korean War. Joseph was stationed in Fairbank, Alaska, as a dispatcher in the Motor Pool.
After his discharge he worked as a Linotype Operator for Benjamin H. Tyrrel Printers in Manhattan for 25 years. Joseph was a member of the Typographical Union, Local #6 in Manhattan.
He and his wife Rose were married on April 5, 1952, while he was still in the service, and remained married for 67 years. In 1958, they moved to Staten Island. Some of his hobbies included gardening and doing odd jobs around the house. Joseph is survived by two daughters: Laura Hayes of Morrestown, NJ, and her husband Ed Hayes, and Diane Bowen of Warren, NJ, and her husband, Scott Bowen. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Amanda and her husband, Ryan Morgan, Bryan Hayes and his wife, Kerri, Eric Hayes, Joseph Bowen, and Lindsey Bowen. Joseph is also survived by his great-granddaughter Lacey Morgan.
In addition to flowers, the family would appreciate donations be made to the American Heart Association.
Funeral from the Matthew Funeral Home, Inc., 2508 Victory Boulevard, on Monday, departing at 9:30 am. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Family R.C. Church at 10 am. Entombment to follow in Woodbridge Memorial Gardens, Woodbridge, NJ. Family and friends may visit on Sunday from 3:00 to 7:00 pm.
