Obituary of Albert Fusco

Albert John Fusco Albert John Fusco was born June 22, 1930 in Manhattan. He spent his childhood living on Mott Street in Manhattan with his parents and nine siblings. He attended Metropolitan High School. On August 1, 1951, at the age of 21, he was drafted into the United States Marine Corps. He would serve from 1951 to 1953 and spend 6 years serving in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. Al's service in the Corps began as he travelled by train to Parris Island, South Carolina to complete Boot Camp. From Boot Camp, he was transported to Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton in California. There, he would train in a weapons company for 2 ½ months and be assigned to 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division in Weapons Company #0334 using heavy weapons such as mortars, 3.5 rocket launcher, flamethrowers and the like. He then boarded a troop ship with 5,000 Marines and sailed to Sasebo, a city located in Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan. After 3 days, he boarded an amphibious ship and made a landing in Incheon, South Korea. There, he engaged the enemy in the rifle company on the front lines for 13 months in a Korean area referred to as the Punchbowl. From Korea, in 1953, Al was deployed via troop ship to Kobe, Japan, then onto Treasure Island, San Francisco and finally home for a 30-day leave. He was deployed to U.S. Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina where he was assigned to maneuvers for 2 months. Following, Al was assigned to Naval Station Norfolk for Military Police duty. He was detached to the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves for 6 years and received his Honorary Discharge to complete his 8 years of service. Al was married on September 25, 1954 to Carmela, who everyone knows as Dolly. They raised three children in Brooklyn: Carl, Michael and Linda. Al and Dolly moved to Staten Island in 2001. There, they enjoyed time with their three grandchildren: Michael John, Peter James, and Peter Michael.
