For the people who knew my father well anything you are about to hear is not news. For those who did not know him well hopefully these words will do him some justice....although I doubt it.
Our father was the epitome of the rags to success story. He did what I’m pretty sure, I and most people could or would never have done. He left everything he knew, family, friends, acquaintances, language, everything familiar to him.
He came to this country with nothing...nothing, not 1 lira in his pocket. He learned to work hard early in his life because it was work or starve where he was from. He brought that work ethic with him. He learned to thrive on hard work. I guess it was the sense of accomplishment that came with hard work that made him that way, that feeling is something some people go their whole lives not knowing. He took it to the extreme, starting a family, having a big family, burdening himself without thinking of it as a burden. He always provided for us. We were never hungry, we were always warm and dry....all thanks to him. I am sure there were times when it was too cold or too hot or he wasn’t feeling well or he just didn’t feel like going to work but he always did.
He instilled the work ethic in all of us.
A lot of people are expressing their sympathies about our dad’s long battle with this illness. Most of the fight was not with the illness itself but what it took from him. The frustration of not being himself, not being able to tinker and fix stuff, not being able to dig around the yard (and beat my brothers in the biggest tomato contest) or yell at the TV at any sporting event.
We must apologize we are going to sound selfish but he didn’t deserve to go the way he did. His entire life he worked, suffered and sacrificed for others. He deserved a peaceful and quiet death. Again, sorry for the selfishness.
We are happy our father got to see the success of his children and grandchildren. The best thing he left behind for us is his example.
We are so incredibly grateful and happy that we can stand here today and tell you we were blessed to have our dad.
To say we loved our dad is an understatement.
To say we are going to miss our dad....is an even greater understatement.
