Obituary of John A. Sorrentino

John A. Sorrentino, 73, of Castleton Corners, passed away peacefully on February 10, 2020. He was the beloved husband of the late Louise (Babes), loving father of Isabella Sorrentino, Phyllis Carollo and her husband Andrew, Nicola D'Agosta and her husband Gregory, and Katherine M. Coletti and her husband Thomas; cherished grandfather of Samantha, Gabriella, Alexa, John, Gianna, and Alexander; dear brother of Joseph Sorrentino and Louis Sorrentino, and the late Nicholas Sorrentino, late Anthony Sorrentino, and late Maria Caponi. John was also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. Mr. Sorrentino was born in Italy in 1946 and came to the United States as a young child, being raised in Brooklyn. He was graduated from Lincoln High School and furthered his education at Kingsborough Community College. John was drafted and served in Vietnam as a Sergeant in the Army during the Vietnam War, earning a Bronze Star and the Army Accomodation Medal. When he returned home from the service he went into business for himself, first in Brooklyn on Avenue X, as Ciro's Pizzeria, and later opened three pizzeria's in Mahnattan as My Daddy's Pizza. He and his crew served their customers with a smile and a joke everyday. During the Septmber 11 attacks, as the towers crumbles in lower Manhattan, John opened the doors to his store allowing fleeing New Yorkers to take safe harbor from the approaching debris cloud. John provided food, water, and shelter to complete strangers while expecting nothing in return. Some of his hobbies included collecting model trains, taking long rides in his car, listening to old music and watching old movies. In his younger days he enjoyed playing soccer. Most importantly he enjoyed spending time with his family. Funeral from the Matthew Funeral Home, Inc., 2508 Victory Boulevard, on Thursday, departing at 10 am. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Teresa's R.C. Church at 10:45 am. Interment to follow in Resurrection Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to visit on Tuesday from 6:00 to 9:00 pm and Wednesday from 2:00 to 5:00 and 7:00 to 10:00 pm.
