To the Hoffmans: As Charles noted, he, Alan, Kurt, Kevin and I had the pleasure of having “Hoff” as a good friend growing up. Gerry and I were in the same class at St. John’s Lutheran School and played many a game of basketball both at school and in the church’s parking lot behind his home. Gerry was blessed with huge hands and he was the first person we knew who could palm a basketball. Those big hands also helped him reach into the engine compartments of his cars to do just about everything from tune-ups to taking apart the engine to “just clean it and put it back together”, so his driveway became his mechanic shop, usually to the distain of his parents. I learned a lot from Gerry about cars and he helped me put a header and tachometer on my first car, a Toyota Corolla. We drove many miles around Staten Island (usually to Bacci’s on Hyland Blvd for cheeseburgers) and also to Englishtown, NJ, where I remember meeting Thor. In Gerry’s basement were sheets of painted plywood decorated as a village with trains. As I too had model trains, we would spend endless hours constantly improving our miniature towns crisscrossed with train tracks. His talent with a base guitar opened my eyes to music of the 60s and 70s. We spent summers in my parent’s log cabin in Vermont where he helped me build a fence. After I moved to Florida, we unfortunately grew apart except for sending Christmas cards and we enjoyed getting your cards, especially the recent ones with the girls in their ice hockey uniform. After hearing of his health issues, I was fortunate enough to speak with Gerry before he passed, and want to express my deepest condolences to you.

To the Hoffman Family: I extend my deepest condolences on the loss of Gerry. I. along with my dear friends Kevin Ahr, Steve Schlamp, Allen Archer, Curt Jacobson, and others, had the good fortune of having Gerry, his brother Glen, and his parents as friends during our youths. As expressed in his obituary, Gerry was a extremely intelligent and mechanically-gifted, as well as a kind and gentle soul who was always eager to help others. I think about him all the time when I do a car repair that he taught me - among the only I know. I still remember listening and talking about music, car engines and life with him at his house on Smith Court. I have many fond and lasting memories too, including taking him home from a party one night when he may have a little too much to drink, getting him to his bedroom, and my being almost out the door of the house before hearing that he was in deep trouble with his mother! My parents also admired him.
Although I did not keep in touch, I have and will continue to remember and cherish my friendship with the wonderful man we fondly called "Hoff."

Dear Ruth and Family,
Gerry and I met it Mckee HS on Staten Island in 1972 and have been good friends all these years. We shared many a good time chasing the ladies and working on cars!
Gerry had a Dodge Coronet that we dragged down to Englishtown NJ where my father had a shop. We would spend weekends working the car or traveling down during the week after school. One weekend before Gerry came down to NJ, my father and I painted Gerry’s car over the course of the week and did not tell him. After school Gerry and I took a trip to my father’s place to work on the car and when we arrived my father opened the garage door. Gerry saw his painted and polished Coronet for the very first time. He was floored and I still remember his flush face and the tears in his eyes. We had so much fun with the cars that carried over into our adulthood.
I will miss Gerry, but God promises we will meet our loved ones again one day. Please accept the condolences from me and my family.

Ruthie,
Remember when Jerry and Jon fell asleep sitting on the on the ends of your couch and we dressed them with reindeer antlers and took pictures, lol. Your family and friends have a lot of memories in your hearts of Jerry. Let them give you comfort, peace and love.
