Obituary of Anthony E. Vaccaro

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Anthony Eugene Vaccaro. He was born on May 20, 1922 and died in his Staten Island home on February 1, 2022 just three months short of his 100th birthday. He served in the army during World War II as a member of Company B, 27th Armored Infantry Battalion, 9th Armored Division where he earned the nickname “Cowboy”. His unit fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was credited with capturing the Remagon Bridge. Tony was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in Germany toward the end of the war. After Military service he opened up his own tailor shop in Manhattan where he did tailoring for many stars like Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis and Frank Sinatra who were performing at the Copacabana. Anthony then went to work for the United States Post Office, where he retired at the age of 60. He was an avid music lover. Tony played both the saxophone and mandolin and used his musical talent to entertain his family and residents of nursing homes. Tony enjoyed swimming, diving, camping, gardening and playing competitive handball in Coney Island. Anthony loved animals and his house was never without pets. Anthony is survived by his wife of almost 75 years, Sara C Vaccaro, his sister Josie, his son Eugene and daughters Rosemary, Janet and Joanne, grandsons Scott and Vincent, granddaughters Genene and Samantha, great grandchildren Luke, Jack, Kaleigh, Tanner and Giuliana. He was predeceased by his father Eugene ,his mother Rose, his sister Connie, brother Chuck and grandson Eric. A Funeral Mass is being held at 10:30 on Saturday, February 5th at Our Lady of Pity R.C. Church, located at 1616 Richmond Ave, Staten Island, NY. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Luncheon following mass at Z One Restaurant.
