Obituary of Catherine M. Sorrentino
Catherine M. Sorrentino (nee Gatto), 101, of Rosebank, passed away peacefully on February 12, 2018, at Sea View Nursing Home. She was the beloved wife of the late Joseph; dear sister of her oldest brother John Gatto, who was killed in France during WWII in 1944, the late Anthony Gatto, the late Mario Gatto, the late Josephine Larca, and the late Angelina Barleto; loving aunt of Rosemarie Krumrey, Anthony Gatto, and Dianne Sullivan and the late Fred Larca and the late Anthony Gatto. They were like children to her. She was also survived by many other nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews.
Catherine was born in 1916, in Newark, New Jersey. She moved to Staten Island as a young child in 1921. She lived in various communities throughout her time on the Island, including Castleton Corners, West Brighton, and Rosebank. Mrs. Sorrentino worked for years as a Dress Maker for the Trovato Dress Shop, and also was co-owner of the former Sorrentino Bakery, on Henderson Avenue with her husband.
During World War II, Catherine served as a mechanic at the Bayonne Military Terminal.
She was described by her family as very religious and devout. Catherine was a member of the St. Rita’s R.C.C. St Benedict Society. She also attended St. Joseph’s R.C. Church in Rosebank. In her spare time she enjoyed fashion, especially making her own hats and blouses. Also she enjoyed trips to Atlantic City.
Funeral Service at the Matthew Funeral Home, Inc., 2508 Victory Boulevard, on Tuesday at 8:00 pm. Family and friends will be received for visitation on Tuesday from 4:00 to 9:00 pm. Funeral procession departing from the Funeral Home on Wednesday at 10 am. Interment will follow in Silver Mount Cemetery.
