Obituary of Denise L. Hernandez-Kempe

Denise Hernandez-Kempe, 73 of Staten Island, was called home to our Lord on Friday, September 23 surrounded with an outpouring of love and comfort from her family. She was the beloved wife of Robert Kempe for 20 wonderful years. Loving caring and amazing mother of Doreen Renée Knight, Jason Brown and his wife Michelle, stepmom of Katlyn Kempe. Adored sister of Andrea Lopez and her husband Bob, Debby Guiffre and her husband John. Cherished grandmother of Jerard DeFazio and Aléxxa-Rae Aswad and her husband Eddie. She was blessed with a great grandchild Addison Rae Aswad and she will be watching from heaven at the upcoming arrival of her second great granddaughter Elliana Aswad in a few short weeks. Denise also had many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. Her entire family will always remember her as a beautiful caring generous thoughtful soul. Denise was born on March 26, 1949 in Bayonne New Jersey. As a young girl her family moved to Staten Island New York. She graduated from Port Richmond high school and spent many years working for the New York City Department of Probation Family Court unit. She built amazing memories with her family and friends during her retirement years. She had a love for gardening and decorating her beautiful home with flowers and palm trees around her pool and would never turn down an opportunity to go pull on the one arm bandits in Atlantic City! She loved her concerts, trips to Florida and even went zip lining With her sisters in Las Vegas! She was always the life of the party but she especially loved to host them! She threw Halloween parties in her house that encouraged her family to come up with the most elaborate costumes and it was always a good time had by all. Thanksgivings we’re always held in her home, fond memories for everyone to cherish. Her grandchildren were the light of her life. She wouldn’t make a shopping trip without checking with her loved ones first to see what they needed or wanted. She was a fabulous beautiful person whose family meant everything to her. Funeral from the Matthew Funeral Home, Inc., 2508 Victory Boulevard, on Wednesday, 9/28, departing at 10:00 am. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Star of the Sea R.C. Church at 11:00 am. Committal service to follow at Rosehill Crematory. Family and friends may visit on Tuesday, 9/27, from 4:00 to 8:00 pm.
