Dear Bill,
There is so much I want to say, yet I feel so little I can say. But if I have the time and space, I probably could write a short story about things I want to say. But to make it as condense as possible, until a couple of nights ago, I think I finally get why some people thought ours was an odd friendship. There is the age gap (you were 70 and I’m forever 21), the differences in interests (you enjoyed drinking, I don’t drink; you were used to after work get-togethers, I am lousy at it unless it’s preferably a Friday night), but ours was nonetheless, a friendship. I remember that time you told me that a couple or few of our colleagues labeled us “Woody (Allen) and Soon-Yi (Previn).” I was unfazed by the insinuation because our conscience was clear, but greatly offended about the references, for surely I thought and verbalized to you that we looked way better than those two! And I remember us laughing about it while we were making one of our aimless lunch-time walks around Wall Street. I also remember telling you that I would rather be called Michelle (for an actress I admire, you know who I mean, but I know I look nothing close to) and thus, how I started signing my name as “Michelle” in some of our correspondence. But we both enjoy Indian and Japanese food and talking. Just talking about family, sharing about our individual travels, life, a little bit about your experiences during your service, which you weren’t keen talking about, but oddly, I found some interest in, etc. I remember you encouraging me to go on a cruise, which my husband and I did and introducing me to eel roll – yum! There are so many things to share, but I don’t think I have the luxury of space. We have been friends for almost 30 years, something you always noted through the years each time we saw each other. You would often remind me how long we’ve been friends and I don’t know why you always did that. I was your friend for life, and you will be mine for life. For you will live on in my heart and memories, never to be forgotten. They say we can never tell about one’s true character until they have passed on, well, now I can say, you were a good person. I will sorely miss you, as you might know now, and you are and always will be loved. May God have mercy on your soul. Rest in peace “Woody.”
Love,
Michelle
